How to use these periodic table flashcards
Chemistry gets much easier once the symbols are automatic: reading a formula like NaCl or H₂O stops being a decoding exercise. Most middle and high school courses expect students to know the first 20 elements by symbol and name, and the familiar metals whose symbols come from Latin (Fe for iron, Au for gold, Pb for lead) trip people up the most. That is exactly this deck: 30 cards with big symbols on the front and the answer on the back.
- Keep the 30 elements or add more as "symbol - name, atomic number" lines.
- Choose 6 or 8 cards per page: the symbols print huge, which helps from across a table.
- Print double-sided on the long edge, or fold-in-half on a single-sided printer.
- Cut on the dashed lines and quiz symbol to name, then turn on "Swap sides" for name to symbol.
Tips
- Group the Latin-symbol metals (Na, K, Fe, Cu, Ag, Sn, Au, Hg, Pb) into their own mini deck; they need the most practice.
- Ask for the atomic number too once the names are easy: it is printed on the back of every card.
- Pair with the science vocabulary crossword on CrossSheet for a full review lesson.
