How to use these sight words flashcards
Sight words are the little words that show up in almost every sentence a beginning reader meets, and many of them cannot be sounded out. Quick, daily practice with flashcards is how most kindergarten and first grade classrooms build them into instant recognition. This deck starts with the Dolch pre-primer list. The sentence on the back lets a child read the word in context once they know it alone, and gives a parent helper something to say.
- Keep the 40 words or delete the ones your reader already knows. Add next week's words on new lines as "word - sentence".
- Pick 4 or 6 cards per page for small hands and big letters; 8 or 10 saves paper for older readers.
- Print double-sided with "flip on long edge", or choose fold-in-half if your printer only prints one side.
- Cut on the dashed lines. Card stock or a quick laminate makes the deck last the year.
Tips
- Practice in short bursts: five new words a day, mixed with words the child already knows, beats one long session.
- Sort into two piles, "I know it" and "not yet", and celebrate when the not-yet pile shrinks.
- Want word-only cards? Delete the sentences: lines with no back print as single-sided fronts.
- The same list makes a word search on PuzzleSheet and bingo cards on BingoSheet for a game day.
