How to use these vocabulary flashcards
Vocabulary sticks when students meet a word, try to recall its meaning, and check themselves, again and again over a few days. That is what a flashcard does. Most teachers already have the week's words and definitions typed in a document or a spreadsheet; paste them here, one word per line with a dash before the definition, and the deck is ready to print. The sample list is the same one CrossSheet uses for its vocabulary crossword, so a class can study with the cards and review with the puzzle.
- Paste your words as "word - definition" lines, or two columns copied from a spreadsheet (the tab is the separator).
- Up to 60 cards per deck. Long definitions shrink to fit; anything over 240 characters is trimmed and the page tells you.
- Pick 6 or 8 cards per page for definitions of a sentence or two.
- Print double-sided on the long edge, cut, and hand out a deck per student.
Tips
- Have students write their own example sentence on the back under the definition: making it personal helps it stick.
- Use "Swap sides" for a harder round: read the definition, name the word.
- Turn the same list into a crossword on CrossSheet with one click: the words become the answers and the definitions the clues.
